Located in the Local Government area of Wollongong, Gwynneville is an inner city suburb of Wollongong, 2 km northwest of the city centre. Originally known as Gwynne Ville, it is named after the Gwynne family who were the first landholders.
In 1886 was sold in two lots which were subsequently sub-divided. The first parcel, owned by John Gwynne, consisted of 86 allotments and was auctioned on the 3rd March 1886. The second parcel, bordered by Northfields Avenue, Gipps Road and Murphy’s Lane were auctioned off in 47 allotments by William J Gwynne of the 27th November 1886. An area of bush heritage land is located on the southern side in and around Wiseman Park.
Divided by the Southern Freeway and its interchange with Wollongong’s Northern Distributor, it is centrally located and as it borders the University to the north, it is a popular suburb for student accommodation.
Bordered by West Wollongong, Keiraville and Wollongong, it covers a small area of 1.2 sq km. In 2006 its population was 2,331 persons, with the largest age sector being between 20-29 years old. The majority of the population are not in the labour force and of those who are are professionally employed and most travel to work by car. There are approximately 910 dwellings, with the majority (54%) being houses. 30.3% of properties are fully owned, with 22.2% being purchased and 54% are owner occupied. 52% of the population are married couples, mainly with no children.
The current median price of houses, units and vacant land is $416, 439 compared to $387,055 for the Local Government area of Wollongong. There are 9 parks, 2 child care centres and 2 primary schools, St Brigids and Gwynneville Public School.
The area is serviced by a neighbourhood shopping centre on the eastern end of Gipps Road and includes a post office, petrol station and assorted food stores. Also within the area is the Wiseman Park Bowling Club and Beaton Park Leisure Centre, a major sporting & fitness venue.
